How Black People Are Represented In Babylon

Babylon(1980) is a story about a young black male growing up on the inner streets of London, the main character “blue” receives loads of racial discrimination.

In the film Babylon black people are portrayed in a way which makes them look as if they were in a lower class, during the film there is a scene that shows the white community in their flash cars and then it shows the ghetto’s were the black people live and you can see the contrast of how the two different communities live, in the ghetto there are building all boarded up and in bad condition. The lighting in this scene also plays a important as when they show the ghetto the lights are all dark.

Black people in the film are also portrayed as outsiders an example of this would be when a white women comes out of her house shouting racist words at the black people she also says “ go back to your country” at the time this film was made there was a lot of controversy about black people and how they didn’t belong in this country.

In the film there is a scene where “blue” is walking down the road looking into the shop windows when a police car pulls up next to him and begins to chase him. This shows how the white people thought of the black people being criminals and gangsters because when the police did question him they said “ you was about to rob that shop” already assuming that he was there to do a crime.

The movie was created to show how black people were portrayed although the film has these scenes where black people are treated in a bad way their main point was to show the rest of the world how the white people treat black people.
